NaturalReader

NaturalReader, free version is a Text to Speech software with natural sounding voices. This software can convert any written text such as MS Word, Webpage, PDF files, and E-mails into spoken words. I was impressed with its Web page reader, but the directions for accessing this feature was a little confusing. I requested tech-support to help with this problem and I received a prompt response to my inquiry, impressive. I didn't have any problems using the Internet reader in Firefox. I loved the program, but after a couple weeks of the floating menu bar disappeared. Reinstall the program and the new menu bar looks a little scrambled. I was happy to have it back though. When I was readjusting the voices I found that it didn't give you an option to hear the voice, but you had to return to the read page to see if the voice and speed was acceptable. Small detail, but all the other programs have this feature built-in.

The webpage reader does not highlight words as it is read, but at this time it is the best that I've seen, that includes my favorite Kurzweil.

NaturalReader can also convert any written text into audio files such as MP3 or WAV for your CD player or iPod, not free version.

free version program size of about 868 MB, nice clean package

Kurzweil 3000 Demo

Kurzweil can be saved as a MP3 file and played as just an audio file. I can only save my highlighting and bookmarks in the KES format. The webpage reader is really bad: if a new page is opened in a new browser Kurzweil does not follow, reading a blog today the program refused to start where my cursor was, it kept jumping back to the beginning. Frustrating. The easiest way to use it is cut and paste. Labor intensive.

This is a full featured product, and the price reflects that. While I was in school I found highlighting and bookmarking feature extremely helpful. I did not have to go back and re read/hear the entire chapter or article, but could just review my highlighted material.

A program I found that just hit the market, I have not tried it out,

Dolphin

Dolphin has been creating software solutions for people with visual and print impairments since 1986. Their software is called "Cicero"Scans and converts printed documents to synthesized speech and reads them aloud to you.

The consumer report I read, not impressed scanning.

No demo on the website and they don't offer a free demo version of their product. They do give a 30 day money back guarantee. unknown features.

ConfidentReader reads the electronic text, speaks it, and highlights the material to help the user associate the sounds of letter combinations and the visual information more efficiently. The typing echo feature recites text back automatically by letter, word, or sentence, so mistakes in typing are heard and can be corrected immediately.

Premier Literacy

The E-Text ReadPremier Literacy er is designed to be a reading tool. You can use it for opening up and reading existing documents in your computer or you can cut and paste from any program on your computer. You can even insert pictures into the text. It is an “easy to use” reader that gives you the ability to change voices, read at any speed, and even allows you to make notes into the document you are reading.

Free Trials available, I will update comments after I have taken it for a spin.

Another program I looked at was FlameReader I wasn't impressed with the fluency of voice, but it I thought the translation option was cool, but I don't know how accurate the translation is.

FlameReader

I found a bad virus/worm in this program, Be Careful

The voice is pretty choppy and the top speed is 180 words a minute. At the faster speeds it does sound a little better. This program does not have a button to jump to the next paragraph or sound volume. I was surprised that it did not include help files to assist the user. Free version only offers one voice, female. I was not able to activate read from the web in the free version.

Usable features in the free version being able to start anywhere in the document, starting stopping without the cursor moving, the zoom feature works really well, but of the most impressive feature of this program is that it will translate from one language to another. This translation feature explains why this program is a whole lot better than the other readers taking up 4,096 MG
